Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12
I was very fortunate to grow up in a Christian family. In fact, I sometimes have to step back and realize that I am blessed beyond measure and not everyone was handed the precious gifts that I was. I thank God daily for the examples that He placed in my life. My grandfather was one of those gifts that I will never be able to thank God enough for. He wrote a devotion once, that I believe is relevant for this study that I would like to share with you.
One afternoon after sledding, my granddaughter Winnie and I were returning to the house for some hot refreshments. I was walking in front of her, carrying the sled, and she was following close behind me. I said, “Winnie, how are you coming?” She responded, “Okay Pappy, I’m walking in your foot-steps (Prints)”.
What an eye opener. I thought of the Scripture in Proverbs. (22:6). “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Oh, the joy children and grandchildren bring to our lives, if we but take the time for them. I’ve discovered the best gift we can give to our children is our time. After all we are the ones that receive the blessing.
What an awesome responsibility, setting the example. Whether we realize it or not, our example leaves an impression on others, especially our own family. Let’s ask God to help us make it one of love, faith, and purity of life.
Oh Christian, remember you bear his dear name,
Your life is for others to view;
A living example, men praise you or blame you
And measure your Savior by you. (Anonymous)
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Example is not the main thing in influencing others, it is the ONLY thing.
My grandfather did not just say these things, he lived by them. He reached so many people during his time on this earth by being an amazing Christian example. Who have been your examples? Are you living to be an example to others? May our example show the world the love of Christ and the salvation that He alone provides.
