Getting good at something requires a lot of time and a lot of discipline.
Whether you’re an athlete, artist, or architect, your abilities don’t just happen. They are cultivated, crafted, and refined with each moment of attention you give them. But sometimes we aren’t at our best, no matter how much we’ve practiced or studied. Sometimes we fall flat on our faces, and it can be very discouraging to the point where we want to throw in the towel and move on.
Believe or not, this can happen on your journey to mature faith in Jesus Christ. We have created this fairy tale that, once we’re on that path with God, it’s smooth sailing from here on out. But it’s not. There are pitfalls of temptation and life’s distractions that pull us down and can keep us from focusing on the goal. But when these obstacles rear their ugly heads on your faith journey with Christ, ask yourself this: will you allow these burdens to stop you in your tracks, or will you use them to make you a stronger and better person, a better disciple, than when you first started?
